Setting Up a Base Camp when Mountain Climbing

Going on a camping trip is one of the most thrilling adventures that you can have. It is an adventure for families and friends to gather together when they go on a camping trip. Some preparations and survival techniques are required while you are out camping. Without these life saving tricks, you may have to be rescued by the park rangers.

Deciding where to pitch the base camp is one of the hardest decisions that you have to take. A good location is very necessary since this will ensure that all people are well and safe. The main consideration for the location should be safety. Of course the base camp should also have a great view. A combination of both elements should be the consideration for setting up the base camp.

Other considerations for choosing the location of the base camp

* The base camp should be on flat ground near a river but not very close.

* Ensure that it is not very high up in the mountain or on the cliff top as these places can be very windy and there is danger of lightning.

* There should be plenty of natural obstacles such as trees and rocks.

The tent area

The camp needs to be divided into four major areas. The areas will be divided into tent area, the toilet area, the washing area and the cooking area. The tent area should be on high ground.

Take cover from trees since weather conditions can change overnight. Look out for wind conditions. Pitch the tents in such a way that there is enough ventilation in the interior of the tents.

The cooking area

The cooking area is the next essential region. The cooking area should not be too far off and neither should it be close enough for the ashes to be blown inside the tents. A space of 20 ft. (maximum) should be between the cooking area and the tent area. Cooking should be in the open unless the weather conditions become really rough.

The washing area

The camp needs to be built next to a river as it enables washing and bathing for the camp members. Or else you would have to look for a water source. The soaps and detergents that you use should be biodegradable. Preserve water. Do not use more than necessary.

The Toilet Area

The camp should have a toilet area which is not close to the water source. Ensure that you dig a makeshift potty. This should be covered with sand and stones after you have done your thing. Make sure that you cover it well for the future campers.

Do not leave anything behind that non biodegradable as it pollutes the environment. Take your trash with you when you leave. Leave the place in good condition for future campers to enjoy.
